Turn Everyday Items Into Extravagant Halloween Decor

Turn Everyday Items Into Extravagant Halloween Decor
This Halloween I want to go "all out," but I don't want to break the bank doing it. I have come across several really cute fireplace scenes and I thought "Hey, I have a fireplace, I can do that!" So that is the idea behind the items in today's post. The pieces are for my mantle and the idea is to have a stunning and classy display.
The items in this picture cost a total of $5.60!! The supplies were a total of $4.00. But wait until you see what the items looked like before they got into my crafty hands.

I found all of this wonderful glass at my local resale shop.

I had this laying around my house collecting dust...
I mean I had to dust it EVERY week!

I picked this up on clearance for $.25 a few months ago.
It is really cute, but does not go with any of my decor.

I also picked these two up at the same resale shop for $1 each

So how did I get from point A to point B? Here is what you will need.
  • Glossy craft paint in black. Read the back, make sure it is good for glass.
  • Glitter craft paint. Again, make sure it is good for glass. (this is what I used for the silver sparkles on the votive)
  • Black glitter. I used a "larger grain" if there is such a thing in glitter. I don't know how glitter size is rated. I think the larger size looks more "home decor" less 6 yr old craft project.
  • Glue- regular school glue. In yesterdays post I used Mod Podge. It is important to know when to use glue and when to use Mod Podge. Mod Podge has ingredients in it to seal as well as adhere. Glue is well... glue. That's it.
  • Imagination- Sift through your house, go to yard sales and resale shops. Find items that can be turned into gems.

You will start with your black craft paint, and some patience. It will take several coats. What ever you do, make sure that the previous coat is dry before you start your next. This is hard, I know, but if you don't, the really wet paint will pick up the semi-wet paint and clump it into a big mess.

If your first few coats look like this, don't freak out. The trick is many thin coats.

Who knew you could paint glass and have it look this good!

I painted everything black, even the metal candle holders. I wanted everything to have a very solid black base before covering them in glitter.

To cover them in glitter, I simply painted everything in glue and then coated it in glitter. I will not lie to you, this step is messy.

For the silver glitter, I just painted 2 top coats of the glitter paint.

For the tall vase, I used leftover ribbon from yesterdays post. When I glued the ribbon on, I was careful to glue (hot glue gun) only ribbon to ribbon, in case I want to take the ribbon off later. After I glued the ribbon on, I glittered the vase.

For this step, you do not have to follow what I did. Let your own ideas flow.

If you are thinking "this doesn't really look like Halloween," check out this link. The bird/vase in this picture is my inspiration.

There are a few more elements I need to get together before I build my mantle display. Stay tuned for the final result.
